An example of a chengyu is dui niu tan qin 对牛弹琴 “play the lute to a cow,” which has a similar meaning to the English saying “cast pearls before swine.”Īhlsén, Elisabeth. Chengyu often refer to and/or originate in ancient Chinese history and literature. Chengyu are set phrases or idiomatic expressions, almost always four characters in length, which typically follow linguistic conventions of Classical Chinese. Xiehouyu are not to be confused with the more widely known chengyu 成语. For example, a speaker may only state the first part of the expression rou bao zi da gou–– you qu wu hui 肉包子打狗––有去无回 “to throw a pork bun at a dog––one can never get back what is given away,” expecting that the other party is already familiar with the saying and knows the second part. The second part, often left unstated, contains the allegory or message. The first part of the xiehouyu is always stated and usually describes a scenario. Translator’s Note: Xiehouyu 歇后语 are a kind of witty or humorous Chinese saying that is expressed in two parts. This will support the long-term development of neurolinguistics in China. The discipline should also adopt new research methods and techniques, and establish a professional development scheme for researchers. In the future, Chinese neurolinguistics should give more focus to incorporating the latest developments in global research, especially in the areas of linguistic theory, artificial intelligence (AI), and human brain projects. Chinese neurolinguistics research has yielded new insights into Chinese syntax, semantics, and phonology the Chinese mental lexicon language acquisition and decline second language learning and neural mechanisms of language processing in atypical populations. That said, over the past two decades Chinese neurolinguistics has achieved notable progress, which has been driven by advances in scientific research, the development of research teams, and disciplinary integration in China. The emergence of neurolinguistics in China is a recent development, only established as a distinct discipline in the mid- to late 1990s. Neurolinguistics is a nascent interdisciplinary field that studies language and the human brain at the frontier of modern scientific research.
